Owakudani is one of the most popular places to visit in Hakone. The steaming vents are a geological wonder and give you a chance to get close to the wonders o nature. The black eggs cooked in the sulfuric steaming vents are a popular snack and are said to add 7 years to your life for every one you eat.
Owakudani is most easily reached by ropeway. You can also go by car, but the road often gets crowded and parking is limited.
The Hakone Ropeway runs between Soun Station in Gora and Togendai Station on the shores of Lake Ashi with Owakudani located between the two stations.
The most popular way is on the “Hakone Golden Route” which will take you up the mountain on the Hakone Tozan Train line to Gora Station. At Gora Station, you will change to the cable car which will take you up the mountain to Soun Station. From Soun Station, the cable car will take you directly to Owakudani and the steaming vents. After enjoying and exploring the Owakudani area head back to the ropeway station to take the ropeway down to Lake Ashi to get on the boat to take you across Lake Ashi.
Some people find taking the opposite route a good way to get around the traffic. Taking the bus up to Lake Ashi from Hakone Yumoto, the boat across the lake to Togendai, and the ropeway up to Owakudani. Contact us through messenger anytime with questions or updates on Owakudani.
